Mathiteia (from the Greek word μαθητεία, meaning “discipleship” or “apprenticeship”) is a biblical and spiritual concept that refers to the process of being a disciple — a learner, follower, and imitator of Jesus Christ.

Unlike modern classroom-style learning, mathiteia is relational and transformational. It is not just about acquiring information, but about spiritual formation — becoming like Christ in heart, character, lifestyle, and purpose.

Key aspects of Mathiteia:

Learning through relationship — rooted in close, personal commitment to Christ and to mentors who model His life.

Imitation of the Teacher — the disciple observes, follows, and practices the life of Jesus until His ways become their own.

Whole-life transformation — affecting beliefs, values, thinking, behavior, and mission.

Participation in Christ’s mission — the disciple is equipped and sent to make other disciples, continuing the cycle (Matthew 28:19–20).
